Ichi-Ban Brighton is a satellite club,of Ichi-Ban Crawley, established in 2008.
The Brighton club is adults only and is predominantly a student club, based in the Cockcroft sports centre, Moulsecoombe Campus, Brighton University.
The club is under the instruction of :-
Karate is an effective, traditional martial art centred around developing techniques for single strike knock out. The techniques are developed initially from strong stances and body conditioning, allowing the practitioner to master their own body, and as such to deliver powerful techniques.
Training is centred around four main aspects;
Warm up : Each session begins with a thorough warm up, to increase your fitness and flexibility, this includes stamina exercises, stretching and muscle building exercises.
Khion :(basics- the stereotypical image of Karate, long stances and repetitive movement. This aspect of karate is responsible for the majority of fitness and muscle building, it also incorporates bag work to encourage application of technique).
Kata :(Sequence of rehearsed movements, to prepare for defence against multiple attackers, Kata trains the mind, encouraging practitioners to always be aware of their surroundings, and trains the body to react in different fashions, each enabling the practitioner to deal with an oncoming attack. An essential part of Kata training is bunkai, the application of the techniques against attackers.).
Kumitae :(Sparring- In Shotokan mitts are not worn for sparring (only for Black belt grading and competition) The style relies upon the ability of the both combatants to retract their punches after contact, whilst not injuring their opponent (a good party trick).Shotokan exerts supreme control to the face, but less control to the body.Practitioners are instructed on this from day one, initially by mastering distance for attack and progressing onto free style combat Kumitae teaches the practitioner how to react and how to select an appropriate target, employing techniques from punches, strikes and kicks to sweeps and throws. This also incorporates defence and against multiple attacks and practical self defence (i.e. employing the power of a karate technique not in a karate stance ( a more senior skill- however taught from early on).

As a result of this training regime, providing students are training regularly and hard, they will show a marked improvement in their fitness, co-ordination, flexibility, strength, speed, confidence, bearing, reaction speed and perhaps most importantly their concentration span.
The club has been established for over 30 years in Crawley. It is open to any new students, regardless of previous training experience. Students are encouraged to participate in competitions and take grading, but more importantly is that that they turn up, train, meet new people and improve themselves. Training is specific to the student, and our instructors will help you make the technique fit, allowing you to apply it on anyone.
