What should I wear for karate training?
When you start karate training, wear something loose and comfortable which allows you to move freely.Classes are done in bare feet.
A t-shirt and track-suit bottoms will be fine to start with, and if you decide that you would like to carry on training, then a gi (the correct name for a karate suit), can be ordered throughyourclub instructor.
All gis ordered come with a white belt to signify a beginner; as you progress and take grading examinations, you are entitled to wear different colour belts which show your progress.
There are also various dan or black belt grades depending on the number of years you have been training. Karate training is something which needs time - you cannot become a black belt in six months and anyone who tells you that you can, knows nothing about karate! You need to train regularly in class and practice at home, attend courses and maybe even go to competitions.
LSKA badges are also available to sew onto gis and students are expected to wear the organisation's badge.
If you havelong hair, you should tie itback and jewellery is not permitted, with the exception of a plain wedding ring. If in doubt, remove it!
Chewing of gum is definitely not allowed in class.
Can anyone come and watch?
Parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents and friends are welcome to come and watch the class, and we encourage families to take an interest and support the club.
If you are not sure if you want to train, then you may watch a class to see if you think you might like it.
Please ask permission from the club instructor.
It is expected that people who are not participating will sit quietly and not distract the students, whose full attention should always be on the club instructor.
When you start to train with Lancashire Shotokan Karate Academy, you will be given an information form to complete, which should be returned to the club instructor.
If you decide to continue with karate training, you will need to register with the LSKA association before any grading examinations can be taken.
Licence application forms can be obtained from your club instructor.
Instructor Information
Richard Pavsic was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia in May 1967.
He started training the art of Karate at the age of 8, in Idrija, with Bojan Sever, who was his coach for many years.
He studied under Takashi Tokuhisa and Taije Kase, and competed with the Yugoslavian and later Slovenian National Squad at many events throughout Europe.
An accident in an Austrian championship halted his career in karate for a while, but he cameback fighting again in Britain, and in February 2004, won the Senior Male Kumite at the 2nd North West Open Championships in Preston.
He also took third place in the Kata and 2nd place in the team kumite.
Not bad for someone who was told his ankle was so badly damaged that he would never fight again.......
Richard has continued to compete regularly, both in the UK and internationally (Spain, USA, Slovenia) and won 2 bronze medals in the 4th JSKA World Championships in Manchester in 2008, for Team Kata and Team Kumite, and was placed 4th in the Individual Kumite.
Hewas awarded 5th Dan in December 2009.
